When Mothers Day rolls around, most people start thinking about what gifts to get Mom to tell her they care. Sure, moms are always grateful for nice gifts on Mothers Day, but the day can mean much more. If you are like me, your mom has taught you many things just by her example, and this time of year is the perfect opportunity to say thanks.

All moms are different, but Christian moms have Jesus and the lessons he taught his disciples as an example. As such, they often share a number of similar qualities.

One of the most important qualities a Christian mom has is faith. Of course they have faith in God. But because of that, they are often very positive people. My friend Tammy remembers the time she was sure that she would blow it in the high school play, but her mom believed it would work out alright. That can-do attitude has stayed with Tammy her whole life. True, her life hasnt worked out perfectly the whole time, but her moms example to keep the faith has led Tammy to find innovative solutions rather than just accept when things are wrong.

Generosity is a virtue that many moms shower on their families. Certainly this includes a willingness to give something of value ” a mom will share everything from money to French fries with her kids in need.

But even more important is a moms generosity of spirit ” the willingness to share her heart. One of the most important lessons I ever learned was that my mom was human, with all of the same fears and dreams as anyone else. By being generous with her heart, my Mom taught me to be sensitive and caring with others.

But probably the most important quality a mom can pass to her children is the gift of love. Since Ive become a mom, Ive learned that love means a lot more than I thought it did as a kid.

When I was a kid, I saw love as getting what I wanted. I was hungry and my mom fed me, so mom loved me. I needed money for new jeans and mom gave it to me so she loved me. To me, it was a simple if, then, situation.

Now I am a mom, and Ive learned that the special sauce a mom brings to love is acceptance. People arent lovable as a rule, and so in order to love unconditionally you have to accept someone ” flaws and all. My mom accepted and loved me ” even when I dumped my paper route on her so I could go to basketball practice or begged relentlessly for new jeans. I wasnt nice, but she loved me anyway.

Gifts for mom are important, because they are a chance to say thanks for being mom. But the really important Mothers Day gifts arent from us to mom at all. Instead, they come from mom who has passed on characteristics that have changed our lives forever: faith, generosity, and love.
