Over the years, the number one effort that society has been struggling with when it comes to crime is gang prevention, but it seems that the closer we get to the solution the further away it becomes. Does the government play the major role in eradicating it, or must we as citizens revert back to what “I can do for my country”? Is our duty?

Gang prevention seems as if this is indeed a duty for all of us, but, where exactly do we start? Did the problem of gangs grow to such an extent that individuals feel helpless. Or do we think we cannot help so we stop trying to.

Gangs are a serious problem in society but what do we really know about the gang world. In order to encourage gang prevention, we need to understand gangs better, their signs, their colors and their motives. The police seem to be inundated with gang related crimes and seek the help of individuals to assist in identifying gang members and reporting crimes.

A gang is generally an organized group of people that share similar traits. They have a name, wear the same colors and engage in illegal acts. Usually gang members come from poverty stricken areas and troubled families and find comfort, acceptance and support in their gangs. They view their fellow gang members as their new family and literally will do anything for this synthetic family.

Many will say that gang prevention should be initiated by looking at this reason for gangsterism. As mentioned above, gangs are a result of poverty and broken homes, therefore, gang prevention should include a plan to eradicate such poverty and encourage better family lives. People need jobs and there should be other positive outlets for young people to receive the support and acceptance that they receive from gangs.

Gang prevention begins at home when you suspect that a member of your family or a neighbour is a gangster. The signs often include a change in dress style, secret behaviour and increase in money and possessions. If you suspect that a person is involved in such activity it is our duty to acknowledge it and report it. A problem only increases when you bury it and pretend it does not exist. You may even discover that gang problems are closer to home than what you think.

One of the best strategies for gang prevention is to make sure that young people have plenty to do. You should try to make sure that they fill their time with wholesome and productive activities and don’t just spend time with their friends hanging around on the streets, organised hobbies, sports and after school clubs are an excellent way of keeping young people occupied and provide a sense of belonging.

The biggest supporters of gang prevention are faith-based organization such as churches and NGO’s. Their crime prevention efforts in general are outstanding and because they are mainly aimed at the youth, gang prevention becomes a cause at the top of their lists. Believing that young people have a better chance of being rehabilitated and reformed if they are given positive activities, they take a more direct role in working with young people.

Gang members need to realize that gangs only bring a wasted future and certainly are no solution. Gang prevention should deal with the individual involved in order for them to have hope for a better life.
