If you want to change the ambiance of a room, changing the color is one of the most effective ways to go about it. Color alone does not create mood. Rather the atmosphere of a room depends on a number of factors, including the furnishings, lighting and the contours of the space. Color schemes can not simply be imposed on an existing room and architectural style may also need taking into account.

Decorative styles and color often go hand in hand. Modernist minimalism demands neutral color schemes to accompany un-fussy lines and forms. Tuscan interiors are textured and informal, and unsuited to colors that are too pale or too sharp. Though some decorative styles go with any color scheme, a mismatch can interfere with your attempt to evoke a particular mood.

You may decide that your room and furnishings go better with some color schemes than others. Using a color wheel, you can then choose a scheme of complementary and contrasting colors that will promote the atmosphere you want to pervade your master bedroom.

      Which Mood?

If you are intent on creating a certain mood, first ask yourself if the room and the furnishings will support it. If not, you may need to refurbish. If your furniture is stylistically reasonably neutral, you will be able to utilize most color schemes to create the mood you want.

      Colors and Atmosphere

      Pastels and Neutral Colors:

For a minimalist look and a tranquil atmosphere, these are ideal colors. Neutral colors are contemporary and a versatile accompaniment to many styles of furniture.

      Primary Colors:

Clear, bright colors can add cheerful or sophisticated notes to a plain master bedroom furnished in a contemporary or rustic style.

      Rich and Deep Colors:

Antique furniture in dark wood invites deep, rich colors to complement it. The result can be exotic and luxurious, perfect for some master bedrooms.

      Earthy Colors:

Versatile earthy colors can be warm and sunny or deep and moody. Both can usefully contribute to establishing the ambiance in a master bedroom.

      Blue and White:

Synonymous with cleanliness and calm, this popular color scheme is especially well-suited to fresh and unpretentious cottage-style decor.

      Black and White:

Black and white is a striking, high contrast color scheme for a contemporary master bedroom that is stylish and cool in every sense of the word.

      Browns and Burgundies:

Browns and allied colors are rich and neutral, ideal for some bedrooms that want to avoid frilly or feminine detail. These colors can be elegant as well as warm and welcoming.

      Lighting, Color and Mood

If color is crucial to creating atmosphere, it is in turn dependent on lighting, both natural and artificial. Light can bleach or deepen colors and dramatically alter a room’s atmosphere of. If using blues in a cool room, choose shades with more warmth. Similarly, if using yellows in a warm room, go for cooler shades.

Lighting and color can work together harmoniously to evoke atmosphere. With the right lights, and perhaps colored light bulbs, a room that is cool and neutral by day can be transformed into a warm glowing environment at night, without replacing the furnishings.
