Spain Welcomes Microsoft Technology Centres

Europe’s Spain, home of beautiful beaches and world-class wine, will soon expand its technology footprint. Thanks to U.S. software giant Microsoft, Spain will welcome two new “Centres for Innovation” in this new decade.

Microsoft currently runs technology centres in over 20 locations worldwide. Microsoft technology Centers for Innovation have been launched in an effort to provide technological solutions and market expertise.

The company has centres devoted to specific areas such as law enforcement, financial services, real-estate, business and other industry sectors. Microsoft refers to these centres as “collaborative environments” where experts come together with business managers to create and implement software systems.

Microsoft has already established two such centres in Spain. One is located in central Manresa, Catalonia in Spain’s northeast corner. This particular centre is dedicated to innovation in productivity.

The second centre is located in Palma de Mallorca on the Balearic island of Majorca. This centre’s focus is on tourism industry technology solutions. It’s an important one to the country, since tourism makes up a significant portion of Spain’s Gross Domestic Product.

Maria Garana, the company’s president for Spain, referred to this centre as “a worldwide reference for technological applications in the tourism sector.” Garana notes that this particular location provides tourism technological solutions for clients all over the world, not just in Spain. This seems fitting, considering that the country itself is a world leader in tourism promotion and generation.

For years a Majorca holiday has been more popular among Europeans than any other vacation location.

The software giant first made its announcement in mid 2009. Initially, it didn’t hint as to preferred locations for the new centres. Microsoft did note, though, that one would be a “Cloud Computing” (virtual pay-as-you-go services) centre while the other would focus on health care.

The Centre for Health Innovation would be the company’s first in the world. Microsoft has always provided health care software technologies. However, the proposed new centre will be the first which will be devoted solely to health care software solutions.

Experts in both industry sectors have suggested possible locations for these centres to be built. Places like Alicante, Benidorm and Elche have been proposed. However, Microsoft announced early this year that the new Centre for Health Innovation would be established in the Valencia Community, though no exact location was revealed. Speculation leans
toward the City of Valencia itself as the prime location, although the Community of Valencia has three separate provinces.

No matter where the Centre for Health Innovation eventually ends up, it promises to be a busy one. The Centre will likely be used by clients from all over the world.

Doctors, universities, hospitals and other health care service providers within Spain are excited to anticipate this new resource developing in their own backyard. They will, undoubtedly, be some of the Centre’s most enthusiastic users.

Meanwhile, the newest Centre for Cloud Computing will join the ranks of a number of other such centres worldwide. The company is concurrently developing another Centre for Cloud Computing in Taiwan.

These centres will focus on pay-as-you-go cloud computing services, which can translate into substantial savings over traditional cloud computing models. No word has been issued so far on where the Centre for Cloud Computing will be established in Spain.

It may take a few years to see what the impact of these two new Microsoft centres will have on Spain’s economy. Officials from many of Spain’s industry sectors are excited, though, at what possibilities may open up once these to centres are fully up and running.

Wireless computing on the go

Wi-Fi was probably one of the most revolutionary transitions in modern times. Before the advent of Wi-Fi or wireless computing technology, users were tethered to their desks, routing everything through a LAN line and restricted in where they used their faster and more powerful computing technology by how long their cables were. Wi-Fi changed all that. Suddenly, you had a mobile network that allowed people the freedom to roam and still connect to the Internet and their emails.

A sociological transformation
It is easy to underestimate the impact of wireless computing. It has become a common sight to see cafés full of people all connected up to a server, yet not a cable in sight. An entire business has grown up around wireless computing – the Internet café – that lets anyone, for a small charge, piggyback the establishment’s Wi-Fi connection and surf to their hearts content. It is even possible to connect wirelessly using a mobile phone – a situation that would have been unthinkable 25 years ago when you were lucky if you could connect to another phone number using the first mobile ‘bricks’, let along the fledgling Internet.

It has released the constraints of an old system of doing business. But how does wireless computing actually work?

There are two types of what has become known as ‘wireless’ Internet – either connection through a router (your standard Wi-Fi) or through the mobile phone network. Wireless routers are the most common form of land based system, and are fundamentally a small connection box that allows a signal to be shared between several computers. Basically, computers ‘tap in’ to the signal, which can be made even easier by adding a wireless interface card. These usually come as standard with most new laptops, but can be bought as a separate add-on. USB routers and dongles also give anyone the power to be able to tap into any wireless signal, creating their own ‘access points’ through which the computer can send and receive network data.

Another key component of wireless computing is the actual hardware itself, namely the laptop. There is some contention as to who actually invented the concept of the laptop, but most cite Adam Osborne as the originator of the modern day laptop in 1981, although the ‘clam-shell’ design was attributed to William Moggridge and developed for GRiD Systems Corporation in 1979. It is difficult now to imagine life without laptops, yet it has only been a little over 30 years since their original conception. But probably the biggest influence on wireless computing was the development of WAP for mobile phones, allowing anyone to connect to the Internet using their mobile phone technology. Today, we feel short-changed if our mobile phone can’t connect to the Internet on demand, 24/7.

What future for wireless computing?
The question of wireless computing’s future is uncertain. Many believe that wireless computing has reached its full potential – we now have almost universal coverage thanks to a global satellite system creating a web across the world with very few ‘blind spots’. Smart phones are feature-rich and future-proofed to a certain extent, and laptops are smaller, lighter and more processor powerful than ever. The only area that can really see any form of development to enhance wireless computing is in the field of battery-life. The most up to date laptops and Netbooks can achieve up to nine hours on one battery, but after that you are still forced to tether up to a power source to keep your laptop running – hardly a ‘wireless’ situation by any stretch of the imagination. So for wireless computing to move to a new level and give us true autonomy and control about where and when we use our computers, manufacturers have to address the knotty problem of that infuriating ‘low battery’ symbol. Perhaps then we’ll have truly wireless computing on the go.

Keep your important laptop data secure

We’ve all seen the headlines – reports of laptops containing vital state secrets or sensitive data being left on trains, the chaos this can cause and the retribution it brings down on the luckless owner, especially if they happen to work for a bank. The most obvious answer is to never leave your laptop on a train. But if the worst happens, how can you ensure that your important data is secure?

Passwords – the weakest link
Leaving aside a momentary lapse in concentration causing you to leave your laptop on the 5.15 from Liverpool Street station, the weakest link in any data security system is inevitably the passwords that people choose. Although we’ve all heard it before, having the same password for all your systems is a technological faux pas of extraordinary proportions. Rather than having to break a series of passwords to gain access to your data, a hacker only has to find one, and then all of your data is wide open. That can include bank account details, email address books, PayPal account details, even your Ebay history. So rule #1 is always have different passwords for each data area you wish to protect.

Rule #2 is make sure those passwords are not only secure, but also difficult to decipher. Mother’s maiden names, pet names and birthdays are not secure passwords. A random mix of letters and numbers is usually the best form of password. It may be difficult to remember, but as long as you keep a (secure!) record of those passwords, it will also be very difficult for anyone else to crack them either.

Encryption – a key component in data protection
If your laptop contains important information that you’d rather didn’t become public knowledge, an encryption program is a worthwhile addition. There are plenty of free encryption programs that can be downloaded from the Internet that offer you a level of protection even if your passwords are bypassed and a hacker gains access to your computer. Returning to the previous point, remember that a good encryption program will never compensate for a bad password, but it will slow your average hacker down.

Programs such as TrueCrypt are designed to create an encrypted drive, where you can store your sensitive data. But remember to keep the password to your encrypted files safe, because without that password, you will not be able to access the data. In theory, all encryption can be hacked (an ‘un-hackable’ encryption program has yet to be created), but having some encryption on sensitive data is better than nothing at all. Encryption programs also tend to slow down the machine’s operation, which can be annoying for some users. But not as annoying as having their data stolen…

Biometrics
The most modern laptops have inbuilt biometrics as an additional layer of security. The laptop will only be accessible if a recognised fingerprint is swiped across the biometrics reader. These are state of the art technology features, but can be sporadic in reality. Also remember that once your biometrics is encoded with your fingerprint, nobody else can use that computer so they do offer a good level of protection for the average user. You might have to swipe your finger more than once to get the laptop to boot up properly, though!

Back up regularly
A great investment is an external hard drive, on which you can back up your laptop files regularly, keeping a spare copy of those files if your laptop should decide to disappear into the vacuum that is the train station’s ‘Lost Property’ office. It is advisable to keep back up files stored unencrypted, so that they will be easily accessible should you need to reinstall them into another computer.

If you want to keep your laptop data truly secure, make sure that your laptop is never out of your sight, that your passwords are as strong as they possibly can be and that you incorporate encryption, biometrics and a regular back up into your daily laptop routine. Most importantly, never leave your laptop on the 5.15 from Liverpool Street station…

The advantages of using Windows 7 on new laptops

Windows 7 was launched in a blaze of publicity, advertising a more ‘user-friendly’ system than its predecessor Vista. But many people found Vista and even XP more than adequate for their needs, so if you’re in the market for a new laptop, why should you think about buying one with the new Windows 7 operating system, rather than the tried and tested Vista or XP?

Future-proofing
Future-proofing is the new buzzword in technology. One of the most frustrating things for people using older machines or operating systems is the incompatibility problems that arise with the latest software systems. Microsoft have invested a huge amount of money and time developing Windows 7, which is why there has been such a delay between the launch of Vista and this latest upgrade. Because of the ‘understanding’ that many manufacturers who use Microsoft have with the company, the launch of Windows 7 is bound to herald a flurry of upgraded laptops designed to use Windows 7 as its primary operating system. So buying a laptop that has Vista or XP rather than Windows 7 could mean that future software designed to run on Windows 7 won’t run on Vista or XP operating systems.

However, if you only intend to use a laptop for web surfing, downloading media, emails and office documents such as Word or Excel, an older operating system could be just as effective as Windows 7. But with the wealth of new features available on Windows 7, it might be worth considering future-proofing yourself from the outset.

Upgrading – not exactly easy…
One of the biggest problems with upgrading is the limit imposed by the operating systems on just how easily you can upgrade to Windows 7 without having to do a clean install. That means wiping your hard drive and basically starting again. For Netbook users this presents a huge problem, as many Netbooks do not have CD ROMS, and to do a fresh install you need to be able to slot that operating system CD ROM into the computer.

To avoid all the hassle of clean installs, wiping your hard drive and future-proofing yourself against future upgrades, it’s wiser to start with Windows 7 as your standard operating system.

Security – a new level
One of the biggest worries for laptop users is the security aspect. Because of their portability, laptops are an easy target for unscrupulous hackers, opportunist thieves or even industrial espionage. One of the primary new features on Windows 7 is an improved level of security, something that’ll make any laptop owner sleep a little better at night. Windows 7 also offers better taskbar features, an improved version of Windows Explorer to make surfing the ‘Net easier and quicker and interface shortcuts that make it possible to run two applications side by side. For laptop owners with the advantage of dual core processing power, Windows 7 is tailor-made for laptop use. Microsoft have played it clever – they know full well that the market for laptops is a growing one, and Windows 7 is designed to grow with that market in tandem. By incorporating ideas that users actually want in an operating system, it may be some time before we see W8. So if you are thinking about buying a new laptop, it makes sense to get one with Windows 7 rather than the now considerably dated and troublesome Vista operating system.

How to upgrade your laptop

Anyone into their technology has messed around with a computer at some stage. Desktop PCs, thanks to their size and design, are ideal for upgrading – new graphics boards, an upgraded motherboard or even something as simple as a flat screen rather than the traditional box. But laptops are a whole other story. Compact microcircuitry dissuades everyone but the most technologically savvy from undoing those screws and opening ‘Pandora’s Laptop’. Slotting in a new graphics or sound card into a laptop is not a simple matter of taking the case off and tricking up the insides of the computer. But there are things you can do to upgrade your laptop that don’t involve a degree in electronic engineering and a very steady hand with a soldering iron.

RAM – giving your laptop a better memory
Almost every laptop can be given a RAM upgrade, simply by opening a compartment on the bottom of the laptop and inserting a new memory stick. However, before buying a new stick of RAM, it is strongly advisable to check the manufacturer’s guidelines. Many manufacturers make RAM sticks for their own computers, but it is possible to buy ‘generic’ sticks that can fit a range of laptops. If you are unsure as to whether your memory stick is suitable for your laptop, check with the manufacturer.

Processor power
Upgrading the processor is something that should be thought about carefully before you attempt it. Most modern laptops run dual-core processors, which have enough processing power to run almost any application, including processor-hungry ones like games and graphics programs. It is worth weighing up the cost and time involved in upgrading the processor against the net gain this would achieve. In most cases, the gain will be negligible, and as laptops use microcircuitry to cut down on weight and size, replacing the processor could be described as ‘fiddly’ at best!

Hard disks
The internal hard disk of a computer is the beating heart of any machine, whether that’s a laptop or a desktop PC. While it is relatively easy to replace the hard disk on a PC, laptops are trickier. In laptops that do allow you to replace the hard disk, it is a relatively straightforward process, though again because of the constraints of size, a pretty fiddly job to do. A better option may be to go for an external hard drive to increase the capacity of your machine such as Firewire or USB drives. Although this might make your laptop bag bulge a little, it’s a cheaper and easier option.

That ‘b’ word…
Batteries. The bane of all laptop owner’s lives. It is probably the one thing that everyone with a laptop will upgrade at some time, as batteries do have a finite lifespan (as in the number of times that they can be recharged and still hold enough charge to run your laptop for more than half an hour). The advice here is to ensure that any new battery you buy for your laptop is compatible with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

More of a repair than an upgrade
The other problem encountered by laptop owners on a regular basis is the ‘blank screen’. The laptop boots up but you’re left staring at a black screen. This usually means that the inverter has failed – one of laptops biggest generic weak spots. Inverters can be relatively easily replaced, but again, check with your manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure that you are buying the right inverter for your make and model.

Finally, consider that any upgrades you carry out on a new laptop may invalidate any manufacturer’s warranty, so check carefully before you start tricking up your laptop.

According to a website for technology and engineering professionals, Dice Learning, an MCSE certificate is one of the top 10 qualifications most likely to help an employee increase the size of their income. These findings are partially based on the fact that Dice Learning has almost 1,000 vacancies on its website requesting MCSE certification as a requirement. But what is it about this qualification that makes it so desirable to employers?

MCSE – A ‘Must Have’ for IT professionals

MCSE stands for Microsoft Certified System Engineer. An MCSE certificate means that the bearer is qualified to work with networking concepts and operation systems. Several years ago, Microsoft opened a number of training centres across America to teach people how to become MCSE-qualified within the platforms of Microsoft itself. Since then interest has snowballed, thanks to Microsoft’s position as a global force, to the point where an MCSE qualification is internationally recognized. It is a valued certificate in the eyes of employers, as it shows that a potential employee has a defined knowledge of Microsoft systems. In order to qualify for an MCSE course, a potential candidate must have at least one year’s experience of implementing a network operating system that has between 200 and 26,000 users spread over between five and 150 locations and services which include file and print, dial-in servers and desktop management. They will also need at least one year’s experience in designing networks and the administration of a desktop operating system.

To achieve MCSE status, candidates can now register for MCSE courses online or attend MCSE training courses through organizations such as the Open University. Over the course of approximately 250 hours, the candidate must complete a number of exams, according to the type of certificate they are studying for. There are a number of certificates available, such as for Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft NT 4.0 and Security in Windows Server 2003. Whilst learning Microsoft Windows 2000, a candidate has to pass seven exams, five of which are Core Exams. To obtain a certificate for MCSE 2003, there are a total of six exams to be passed, four of which are Core Exams. Each exam comprises of around 45 – 55 questions and a score of 620 – 660 is required on Core Exams to obtain a certificate. Of the elective exams, a score of between 556 – 675 is required to qualify as a ‘pass’.

Developmental learning

Should a candidate be successful, they are then equipped to prepare, implement, execute and maintain network information systems. However, as technology is constantly evolving, so too are the mechanics of these systems. In order to maintain MCSE qualification, an MCSE technician must attend further courses and pass additional exams to ensure they are familiar with all the latest developments.

As information systems become more and more important to businesses across the world, the skills of the MCSE technician are becoming more highly valued. Undertaking an MCSE certificate may be the best way to greater opportunities and challenges. Although a substantial amount of experience is required and the qualification involves a lot of studying, the financial rewards and potential career moves that can be accessed definitely make all the hard work and exams worthwhile.
